Polarization dependence of light transmission through individual nanoapertures in metal films

چکیده
We present a systematic study of light transmission through individual nanoscale apertures (rectangular slits and circular holes) etched in a 300-nm-thick silver film. Transmission spectra were obtained as functions of aperture shape and size, as well as the wavelength and polarization state of the normally incident light beam. By varying the wavelength of the incident light in the 550–750 nm range and the characteristic dimensions of the apertures from ∼100 nm to 10 μm, a universal behavior of light transmission is revealed. The role of incident polarization and aperture dimensions is investigated in detail, and a clear transition from the geometric regime of light transmission (large apertures) to the subwavelength regime is demonstrated experimentally. A quantitative analysis of the extinction coefficient is reported for rectangular slits, demonstrating that they can act as efficient linear polarizers with extinction ratios >100∶1. Finally, a method to convert far-field to near-field data is developed for circular apertures, revealing the contribution of surface plasmon polaritons to the decrease in light transmission for apertures below the cutoff condition. © 2014 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (050.1970) Diffractive optics; (310.6628) Subwavelength structures, nanostructures; (260.3910) Metal optics; (120.7000) Transmission; (240.6680) Surface plasmons. http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/JOSAB.31.001150

Enhanced second-harmonic generation from individual metallic nanoapertures.
We demonstrate the ability of single-subwavelength-size nanoapertures fabricated in a gold metal thin film to enhance second-harmonic generation (SHG) as compared to a bare metal film. Nonlinear microscopy imaging with polarization resolution is used to quantify the SHG enhancement in circular and triangular nanoaperture shapes. The dependence of the measured SHG enhancement on circular apertur...

Surface plasmon resonators can drastically redistribute incident light over different output wave vectors and polarizations. This can lead for instance to sub-diffraction sized nanoapertures in metal films that beam and to nanoparticle antennas that enable efficient conversion of photons between spatial modes, or helicity channels. We present a polarimetric Fourier microscope as a new experimen...

Recently atomic magnetometers are one of the best tools in biomagnetic measurement such as magnetic field of brain and heart. In this paper, the technology of optically pumped atomic magnetometer based on circularly polarized light absorption pumping is described. We have been investigated a new method for measuring polarization effect in an alkali vapor based on polarized light transmission. I...

The experimental demonstration and characterization is made of the plasmon-mediated resonant transmission through an embedded undulated continuous thin metal film under normal incidence. 1D undulations are shown to enable a spatially resolved polarisation filtering whereas 2D undulations lead to spatially resolved, polarization independent transmission. Whereas the needed submicron microstructu...
متن کاملPolarization control of optical transmission of a periodic array of elliptical nanoholes in a metal film.
The spectral dependences of polarized optical transmission of a metal film with a periodic array of elliptical nanoholes have been studied. Such nanostructured metal films exhibit enhanced broadband optical transmission that one can control by selecting the polarization of incident and (or) transmitted light.
